Change and Difficulty: Why Letting Go is So HARD (but we have to in order to move forward)

Change is inevitable, yet it’s often met with resistance. Why is that? Well, let’s unpack it.

From a mental health perspective, embracing change means stepping out of our comfort zones, and that can trigger fear and anxiety.

Our brains are wired to seek safety and familiarity, so when faced with the unknown, it’s natural to feel apprehensive. The fear of the unfamiliar can paralyze us, causing us to cling to what we know, even if it no longer serves us.

This fear can manifest as anxiety, panic attacks, or even depression, making it difficult to take the necessary steps towards change.

But it’s not just fear that holds us back; unresolved emotional trauma can keep us stuck in the past, making it even more challenging to move forward.

It’s a fascinating concept that suggests our past emotional baggage can weigh us down, preventing us from letting go and embracing what’s next. Whether it’s childhood traumas, past heartbreaks, or unresolved conflicts, and even things that happened before we were born, these emotional wounds can create barriers to change, trapping us in a cycle of negativity and self-doubt.

The Emotion Code offers a unique approach to releasing trapped emotions and clearing energetic blockages that may be holding us back. By identifying and releasing these emotional imbalances, we can free ourselves from the grip of the past and open ourselves up to new possibilities.

It’s a powerful tool for transformation, empowering us to let go of what no longer serves us and step into a brighter, more fulfilling future. It’s been so helpful to me in my life that I became a certified practitioner. you can learn more about my sessions here.

By acknowledging your fears and addressing any underlying emotional wounds, you can break free from the shackles of the past and embrace what’s next with courage and resilience. You deserve to live a life filled with joy, fulfillment, and possibility.

The Consequences of Not Moving Forward

So, what happens if we don’t learn to let go and move forward?

When we cling to the past, we hinder our growth and limit our potential.

Imagine trying to drive a car while constantly looking in the rearview mirror – you’ll inevitably crash.

And when we fixate on past events, relationships, or mistakes, we rob ourselves of the opportunity to focus on the road ahead. Instead of moving forward, we stay stuck in a perpetual cycle of regret, resentment, guilt, shame, and what-ifs, unable to break free from the chains of our own making.

Without a solid strategy to manage change, we risk getting trapped in a cycle of negativity and self-doubt.

Change can be daunting, especially when it requires us to confront our deepest fears and insecurities. Without the proper tools and support systems in place, it’s easy to succumb to the allure of familiarity and resist the call of growth and transformation.

But fear not!

There are ways to break free from this pattern and step into a brighter future.

By increasing our self-awareness, resilience, and a growth mindset, we can overcome the obstacles that hold us back and embrace change with open arms.

Instead of viewing change as a threat, see it as an opportunity for growth and self-discovery.

Take proactive steps to let go of past grievances, forgive yourself and others, and focus on what you can control in the present moment. Surround yourself with supportive people who support you, offer guidance, and encouragement as you navigate the ups and downs of life.

Remember, the only constant in life is change. It’s one of the only things we can count on happening with absolute certainty.

By embracing change as a natural part of the human experience, you empower yourself to adapt, evolve, and thrive in any situation.

If you’ve been letting fear and uncertainty hold you back from pursuing your dreams and living your best life like I did for so long, change is never too late. It’s not easy at first, but it’s worth it.

The Importance of Embracing Change

Change is the essence of life. It’s what propels us forward and opens doors to new opportunities.

Embracing change allows us to evolve, learn, and grow.

Instead of fearing the unknown, why not embrace it with open arms? When we shift our perspective and see change as a natural part of life, we empower ourselves to adapt and thrive in any situation.

Tips for Making Change Easier

  1. Practice Self-Compassion: When navigating change, it’s important to be kind, patient, and gentle with yourself. Transition periods can be challenging, and it’s okay to feel a range of emotions. Instead of criticizing yourself for not handling things perfectly, offer yourself the same empathy and understanding you would to a friend going through a similar situation. Treat yourself with compassion, and remember that you’re doing the best you can with the tools you have.
  2. Focus on the Present Moment: Dwelling on the past or worrying about the future can prevent you from fully embracing the present moment. Instead of getting caught up in what could have been or what might be, practice mindfulness by grounding yourself in the here and now. Take a few deep breaths, notice your surroundings, and engage fully in whatever you’re doing at the moment. By focusing on the present, you can create a sense of calm and clarity that can help you navigate change more effectively.
  3. Surround Yourself with Support: Change is often easier to navigate when you have a strong support system in place. Reach out to friends, family members, or mentors who can offer guidance, encouragement, and a listening ear. Don’t be afraid to lean on others during times of transition; vulnerability can strengthen your connections and provide valuable insights that you may not have considered on your own. Additionally, seeking professional support from a therapist or counselor can provide you with tools and strategies to cope with change more effectively.
  4. Build Resilience: Resilience is the ability to adapt and bounce back from adversity. While change can be challenging, it also presents an opportunity for growth and transformation. Instead of viewing setbacks as failures, see them as valuable learning experiences that can help you build resilience and strength. Practice reframing negative thoughts into more positive and empowering ones, and focus on the lessons you can learn from each experience. By cultivating resilience, you can navigate change with greater confidence and ease.
  5. Embrace Uncertainty: Change often brings with it a sense of uncertainty and unpredictability. While this can be unsettling, it’s also an opportunity to embrace the unknown and trust in the process of life. Instead of trying to control every outcome, practice surrendering to the flow of life and trusting that things will unfold as they’re meant to. Embracing uncertainty allows you to approach change with an open mind and heart, ready to embrace whatever opportunities and challenges come your way.
  6. Set Realistic Goals: When facing change, it can be helpful to set realistic goals for yourself. Break down larger tasks into smaller, more manageable steps, and celebrate your progress along the way. By setting achievable goals, you can build momentum and confidence as you work towards your desired outcome. Remember to be flexible and adaptable in your approach, and don’t be afraid to adjust your goals as needed based on changing circumstances.
  7. Practice Self-Care: During times of change, it’s important to prioritize self-care and nourish your mind, body, and spirit. Make time for activities that bring you joy and relaxation, whether it’s taking a long bath, going for a walk in nature, or practicing meditation. Pay attention to your physical and emotional needs, and honor them with compassion and care. By taking care of yourself, you’ll be better equipped to handle the challenges of change with grace and resilience.
  8. Seek Growth Opportunities: Change often presents opportunities for personal and professional growth. Instead of viewing change as a setback, see it as a chance to learn, evolve, and expand your horizons. Look for ways to challenge yourself, step out of your comfort zone, and pursue new experiences that align with your goals and values. By embracing change as a catalyst for growth, you can transform challenges into opportunities and emerge stronger and more resilient than ever before.

Change is inevitable, but how you choose to respond to it is up to you. So, embrace the journey, trust in yourself, and know that you have the strength and resilience to thrive in any situation.

Navigating Change with Support

You don’t have to go through this journey alone. Change can be a challenging and sometimes overwhelming experience, but seeking support from others can make all the difference in how we navigate and adapt to these transitions.

Whether you’re grappling with a major life change, such as a career transition, relationship upheaval, or personal growth journey, or facing unexpected challenges like loss, illness, or financial hardship, having a support system in place can provide invaluable insight, comfort, and perspective.

Simply having someone to listen without judgment, offer a shoulder to lean on, or provide practical assistance can help alleviate feelings of isolation and overwhelm.

Additionally, seeking professional support from a therapist, counselor, or coach can offer a unique perspective and guidance tailored to your specific needs. Therapeutic modalities such as cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), mindfulness-based approaches, and trauma-informed care can provide practical tools and strategies for coping with change, managing stress, and cultivating resilience.

Therapists can help you explore your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors in a safe, supportive environment, empowering you to gain insight into underlying patterns and blindspots and develop healthier coping mechanisms. They can also provide validation, encouragement, and accountability as you work towards your goals, helping you navigate the ups and downs of change with greater clarity and confidence.

Joining a community or group in person or online can make you feel a lot less alone. Having a shared understanding, connecting you with others who are facing similar challenges and providing a forum for mutual support, encouragement, and inspiration can make a big difference.

Ultimately, seeking support during times of change isn’t a sign of weakness; it’s a courageous act of self-care and self-compassion. By reaching out for help when you need it most, you’re acknowledging your own humanity and resilience, and taking proactive steps towards healing, growth, and transformation.

So, don’t hesitate to lean on your support network when times get tough. There's no shame in asking for help.

My Story

I can speak from experience that not getting any kind of outside support is a recipe for disaster. At the height of my depression and anxiety, I isolated myself. I didn’t talk to anyone. I thought I could get through it myself, and it was just easier and less embarrassing to figure it out on my own. This lead to me going deeper and deeper into my mental health crisis.

Because I didn’t allow feedback from anyone (my husband tried, but he didn’t want to hurt my feelings so he didn’t push me and I shut him out most of the time anyway), I didn’t realize how dysfunctional and unhealthy my thinking had become. It’s a nasty cycle and you it only makes things worse and more difficult to get out of.

As humans, we need other people, and it’s okay to reach out for help when you need it.

Embracing Change: A Mindset Shift

Even though it can definitely be uncomfortable, change is not the enemy; it’s the catalyst for growth and transformation.

Think about it – throughout history, every significant advancement, breakthrough, and personal evolution has been sparked by change. From learning to walk as a child to beginning a new career path as an adult, change is woven into the very fabric of our existence. Rather than fearing change, we can choose to embrace it as an opportunity for growth and expansion.

By adopting a mindset that change is inevitable and there is a way through it, you empower yourself to face life’s challenges with courage and resilience.

Instead of viewing change as a threat or obstacle, I see it as a natural part of the human experience. When we shift our perspective and approach change with an open heart and mind, we create space for new possibilities and opportunities to emerge.

So, even if times are tough right now, trust that brighter days are ahead. Just like good times don’t last forever, neither do the bad times.

You aren’t defined by your circumstances; but by how you choose to respond to them. Instead of dwelling on everything going wrong, see what you can learn from each situation or get stronger from having gone through it.

When I made this mindset shift, life got much easier for me and I was able to move past bad times with a bit more ease. I even felt more equipped to deal with the discomfort so the pain didn’t last as long. I built mental and emotional fortitude.

So, take a deep breath, trust in yourself, and know that you have the power to create the life you desire. Embrace change as a friend and ally on your journey of self-discovery and growth, and remember, you’ve got this!
